Cherry Blossom Season in Japan: Typical Dates and How Forecasts Work

When cherry blossoms usually bloom in Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima, Sapporo and more, how forecasts work, and how to plan around them.

Cherry blossom (sakura) season is Japan's most famous time to visit. The blossoms move north like a wave — the "sakura front" — from late March in the south to May in Hokkaido. Full bloom lasts only about a week in any one place.

How forecasts work

Private weather companies (such as the Japan Meteorological Corporation and Weathernews) publish bloom forecasts from around January, updating them weekly. The Japan Meteorological Agency observes official "sample trees" in each city and announces flowering (kaika) and full bloom (mankai).

How to plan

  • Book flights and hotels for a window (late March–mid April) rather than gambling on a single date.
  • Plan a flexible route — if blossoms are early in Tokyo, head to Kanazawa or Tohoku later.
  • Late-blooming varieties (yaezakura) extend the season by a week or two.
  • Expect peak hotel prices in Kyoto; book months ahead.
