Your First Day in Japan: Arrival Step by Step

From landing to your hotel: immigration and customs with Visit Japan Web, getting yen, IC cards, SIM data, airport transfers and what to do on day one.

Long flights and a new language can make arrival feel daunting, but Japan's airports are efficient and well signposted in English. Here's the sequence.

1. Before landing: Visit Japan Web

Complete Visit Japan Web before you fly to generate QR codes for immigration and customs. You can still use paper forms, but the QR codes speed things up. See our visa & entry guide.

2. Immigration and customs

Follow signs for "Foreign Passports". You'll have your fingerprints and photo taken. After baggage claim, scan your customs QR code at the electronic gates or hand in a paper declaration.

3. Get connected and get cash

  • Activate your eSIM or pick up pocket Wi-Fi.
  • Withdraw yen at a 7-Eleven or Seven Bank ATM in the arrivals hall — see how much cash to bring.

4. IC card and transport

Get an IC card (or set up Suica/PASMO/ICOCA in your phone's wallet where supported) and buy tickets for the airport train or bus. Detailed routes are in our airport transfer guide. Too much luggage? Forward it to your hotel from the airport counter.

5. Check in

Hotel check-in is usually 3pm. Arriving early? Most hotels will store bags. Arriving late? Let the hotel know.

6. Keep day one easy

  • Take a short walk around your neighbourhood and visit a convenience store.
  • Eat somewhere simple — a ramen or gyūdon shop near the station.
  • Go to bed at local time to beat jet lag.
