For years, the nationwide Japan Rail Pass was an easy recommendation. Since its price rose substantially in October 2023, it only makes sense for certain itineraries.
The quick rule of thumb
If your trip is mostly Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka with one return Shinkansen journey, individual tickets are usually cheaper. If you're covering long distances — say Tokyo to Hiroshima and back plus a side trip north — within 7 days, the pass becomes more competitive.
A simple method
- List every long-distance JR journey in your plan.
- Look up the one-way fare for each (station machines, JR websites, or route apps show fares).
- Add them up and compare with the current pass price for the number of days you need.
- Factor in value from JR local trains and the Narita Express, but remember subways and private railways aren't covered.
Our JR Pass value helper does this with typical fares preloaded — you can edit any fare.
Don't forget regional passes
Regional passes from JR East, JR West, JR Central, JR Kyushu and JR Hokkaido are often far cheaper and cover the area you're actually visiting.
Non-financial reasons to buy
Some travellers value not having to buy tickets each time. Others prefer the flexibility of booking individual journeys online. Both are valid — just make the choice knowingly.
