Overview
Sendai is only around 90 minutes from Tokyo on the fastest Tohoku Shinkansen, yet sees far fewer foreign tourists than central Japan. The city was rebuilt after wartime bombing with wide, tree-lined avenues, and its downtown shopping arcades and food scene are lively.
The 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami hit the Miyagi coast hard. Today memorial sites and museums along the coast tell that story, and visiting the region supports its recovery.

Mid-range
Chain hotels near the station or Ichibancho.
Luxury
Upscale city hotels near the station, or onsen ryokan in Akiu.
Rough nightly ranges: hostels and capsule hotels often run a few thousand yen per person; business hotels commonly ¥8,000–¥20,000 per room; upscale hotels and ryokan can be far higher, especially in peak seasons. See our accommodation guide.
Getting there
The Tohoku Shinkansen (Hayabusa) connects Tokyo to Sendai in about 1.5 hours — covered by the JR Pass and the JR East Tohoku Area Pass. Sendai Airport has domestic and some international flights and is linked to the city by the Sendai Airport Access Line (about 20–30 minutes).
Getting around
Two subway lines and the Loople Sendai retro-style sightseeing loop bus (day passes available) cover the main sights. Downtown is walkable from the station.
Day trips & side trips
Matsushima
A bay dotted with pine-covered islands, traditionally ranked among Japan's Three Great Views, with Zuigan-ji temple and sightseeing cruises — about 40 minutes by JR Senseki Line.
Yamadera (Risshaku-ji)
A temple complex clinging to a mountainside, reached by around 1,000 stone steps, about an hour by JR Senzan Line.
Zao
Ski resort famous for 'snow monsters' (frost-covered trees) in mid-winter and a crater lake in summer.
Hiraizumi
UNESCO-listed temples including the golden Konjiki-do at Chuson-ji, a short Shinkansen ride north.
Best time to visit
Sendai Tanabata (6–8 August) fills the arcades with huge, colourful paper streamers. Autumn brings colourful foliage at Akiu and Yamadera. Winter is cold with some snow; the Pageant of Starlight lights Jozenji-dori in December. Spring cherry blossoms typically bloom around early to mid-April.
